In the year 1940, college was Established by Lala Munshi Ram Ji Aggarwal. He was the lakhpati and a philanthropist of Fazilka, one of the greatest personality. He was issueless, he wanted to be remembered for the coming generations. For this he established a trust named M. R. Trust, also he decided to establish an education center to provide education to the coming generations of border area as Fazilka is just 5 kilometers away to Indo-Pak border. So he founded M. R. College in 1940 which was administered by the Trust till 1983.

On 30.06.1983, the college had been taken over by the Government and it was named M.R. Government College Fazilka. It is affiliated to Panjab University Chandigarh and recognized under 2 (F) and 12 (B) of UGC Act. The institution is accredited by NAAC in November 2005. This college is well known for providing education to the students near border area as it was the oldest and only one known college in the whole district of Ferozepur. Additionally the college focuses on providing quality education to their students. Furthermore, college also aims to inculcate cultural and moral values to the students through encouraging them to participate in various activities organized by college.
